Ostia Antica’s
archaeological
area is about 30 km away from the centre of Rome and offers its visitors the
unique chance to admire the rests of one of the richest and most active
cities in the Mediterranean.
Leaving from Rome, our
private car will drive down Via Ostiense, one of the main
roads that connect the centre to the seaside. During the trip there will be
a first stop to visit Castello di Giulio II, one of the first
examples of Renaissance military architecture, immerged in a characteristic
Medieval village where the visitor will feel as travelling
back to the past.
The tour will continue
visiting the rests of Ostia Antica, city built in the 4th
century B.C. as a military stronghold between the Tiber river and the coast.
After a short time Ostia became ancient Rome’s commercial harbour. Goods
from all over the world, necessary for the capital’s needs such as grain,
oil, wine and marble, after arriving in the port were then transported
along the river up to Isola Tiberina in the heart of the city. There are
still rests of the ancient city kept in good conditions such as the
Foro , the theatre, the temples and the
houses.
A visit to the
wonderful mosaics present along the path is a must and do not
forget to visit the Ostiense Archaeological Museum located in
the same area where you may admire objects found during excavation such as
sculptures, sarcophagus, terracotta and many other religious items.
Finally we will
continue our tour visiting the tourist harbour in Ostia, a
modern and equipped port where you may admire luxury and magnificent sail
or motor boats. You may also go for a walk along the waterfront and
eventually have the chance to meet a VIP while shopping. |
